Minneriya is most famous for “The Gathering”, one of the largest congregations of wild Asian elephants on earth, when hundreds of elephants converge around the reservoir during the dry season between June and October. Herds of 150 to 300 individuals have been recorded. Sambar deer, painted storks, and macaques also inhabit the park.
