High above the tea estates and cloud-wrapped ridges of Sri Lanka’s central highlands lies one of the island’s most extraordinary natural environments: Horton Plains National Park, a wind-swept montane plateau at 2,100 metres above sea level, carpeted in rolling grasslands, prehistoric cloud forest, and crystal-clear highland streams. The park’s signature experience is the walk to World’s End, a sheer escarpment that drops precipitously for over 870 metres to the jungle plains below, offering views that, on a clear morning, stretch all the way to the southern coast. An early start is essential, as valley mists typically roll in by late morning, veiling the escarpment entirely. Those who arrive early are rewarded with one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic vistas.
