Sri Lanka’s waters lie within one of the world’s most active cetacean corridors, offering wildlife encounters of remarkable scale and frequency. Blue whales, the largest animals ever to have existed on Earth, are regularly sighted off the southern coast near Mirissa and in the deep waters off Trincomalee, often accompanied by sperm whales and Bryde’s whales. Large, acrobatic pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins travel the waters off Kalpitiya and the northern coast, frequently engaging boats in extended bow-riding displays. The season runs from October to May on the west and south coasts, and year-round off Trincomalee.
