Every year, between July and October, one of the natural world’s most astonishing spectacles unfolds around the ancient Minneriya reservoir in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. As the waters recede through the dry season, fresh grass emerges along the exposed lake bed, drawing hundreds of wild Asian elephants from the surrounding forest in what has been called ‘The Gathering’: the largest congregation of wild Asian elephants on earth.
